After a year of being beaten over the head by Jon and Kate, H1N1 and health care reform, sometimes it seems like we might be getting TOO MUCH information. Imagine for a second what life would be like if that well of information was suddenly turned off. Life would certainly be much different and while peaceful for a moment, there would be a void. Information not only teaches us and expands our minds, but it also connects all of us together with common reference points and touchstones. We band together as a society over our confusion about the celebrity of Jon and Kate, our fears over H1N1 and frustrations about the political undertones of health care reform. For a person insulated from the noise of the media, discussions among friends become monologues and spirited political arguments become lectures. The well of information is turned back on for people with vision loss and other disabilities when they turn on Minds Eye Information Service. Listeners have access to 107 publications every week so they can hear the news that they share with their friends and family and make their own mark on the conversation. A grandmother with macular degeneration can tell her 17-year-old granddaughter who is obsessed with Jon and Kate what it was like to be living as one of eight kids during the Great Depression. A father with diabetic retinopathy can reassure his daughter about her swine flu concerns when he relays to her how the Asian Flu swept through his town in the 1950’s. An Iraq war veteran blinded by a roadside bomb can turn his distaste for partisanship into a campaign-rallying cry. You help create these conversations with your gifts to Minds Eye Information Service. By supporting the work of Minds Eye, you ensure that everyone has the chance to decide how much they can sip from the well of information. Like many organizations, Minds Eye had difficult financial times throughout the last fiscal year. In addition to
seeing a $38,734 operating deficit*, Minds Eye also saw losses of nearly $99,000 to its investments. Because
of this financial reality, Minds Eye has become leaner and reduced expenses even further… The next year will bring new challenges and information. To keep programming levels the same throughout our current year and to ensure that listeners can continue their conversations, they need your help. Your gifts help Herman, who says, “Without Minds Eye, my life would be without meaning. The radio keeps me in touch with world events and the local area; it is my life line to the world.” You’ll also help Lee who told a volunteer that he would feel alone without
his radio. Elaine’s life will be improved because o In the next year, Minds Eye will help Herman, Lee, Elaine and over 11,000 others who have lost their sight or their ability to turn the pages of a newspaper continue to be active participants in our community by providing them with daily readings of local and national newspapers and magazines as well as books and retail store ads. Thank you for everything you do to enhance their lives. * see charts on page 6 for more information |
