Minds Eye Goes Global

Minds Eye GlobalIn previous Radio Readers, you have read about our involvement with the IAAIS, the International Association of Audio Information Services. One of the services of the IAAIS is the Program Share, through which reading services like Minds Eye make their programs available on a network for similar stations to use. A few months ago, Minds Eye began sharing a program called Sports Scene, which was picked up by stations in Springfield, Illinois and San Diego, California since those stations did not have a regular sports program. Since Minds Eye is one of the few stations throughout the world that produces almost all of our own recordings, the staff decided to share some of our many wonderful programs and readers with other stations. We are now syndicating seven additional programs on the network. Here is a list of the programs we will be adding to the Program Share:

• The Blindness and Disability News Hour, hosted by John Weidlich, which consists of newspaper and magazine articles related to blindness or disability-related topics.
• The Funny Pages, recorded by Bob Blanchard, a reading of the weekly comics.
• In the Kitchen, read by Laura Simunich, containing recipes and articles about food and nutrition.
• The Economist, a weekly magazine of international news, recorded by Jane Kinnaman and Matt Rygelski.
• The Consumer News done by our award winning volunteer Celeste Kososki which gives listeners
information from Consumer Reports and Money Magazine.
• The Pet Hour, articles from several magazines about pets, mainly dogs and cats. Charlotte Kroupa is the host of this program, which began several years ago at the suggestion of one of our listeners.
• The Walgreens and CVS Pharmacy store ads recorded each week by Maria Amann.

These programs were chosen because of their universal appeal and because other stations expressed a need for programs like these. More programs will be shared in the future; keep your eye on the Radio Reader for updates.

Celebrating 35 Years of Service

Volunteers deliver a radio to one of Minds Eye's (WMRY's Talking Book at the time) first listeners. Now, over 11,000 listeners hear the programs that Minds Eye offers. On March 1, 1973, when Minds Eye Information Service (then known as WMRY’s Talking Book)
went on the air, it had four listeners, 10 radio receivers and a handful of volunteers. Today we have over 180 volunteers who help Minds Eye Information Service bring the printed word to life to over 11,000 listeners in the greater St. Louis Metropolitan area. In celebration of our 35th anniversary, we will be hosting an open house and reception for all current and past volunteers, friends and listeners on Thursday, February 28, 2008, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend this event to renew old acquaintances and memories.

Anniversary Phone-A-Thon

Lily TomlinAs Lily Tomlin would say on the popular TV show Laugh-In, “One ringy dingy, two ringy dingy . . . is this the party to which I am speaking?” Beginning March 24th, your phone may be ringing with a call from one of our volunteers during our Anniversary Phone-A-Thon. Callers will be asking for your support so we can continue our tradition of service to blind and print disabled individuals for the next 35 years. Please be generous when one of our volunteers calls you!
