VOLUNTEER PROFILE: Lorraine Sugent

Our listeners rarely hear her on the air, but many Minds Eye listeners wouldn’t hear their daily dose of news and information without Lorraine Sugent. Lorraine is responsible not only for mailing the radios out to all of our new listeners, but she also takes on the task of producing the Wednesday newspaper program.

Lorraine is an early riser. Every Wednesday morning at 6:45 a.m., Lorraine walks through the doors of Minds Eye to begin a morning of volunteering. She begins by going through all of the newspapers for the day, choosing articles, getting them in the most logical order and pulling out the articles that don’t fit so the readers can have a smooth show. “I really like the doings of that job. I read the newspaper a lot at home so I kind of know where everything should go,” Lorraine says. By 8:30, its on to the next job - packaging radios and getting them ready to mail out to Minds Eye’s newest listeners.

In addition to her Wednesday morning duties, Lorraine is one of those volunteers that you could call a “Utility Player.” She’s always willing to take on a new challenge and help out in a pinch. She’s a substitute reader, an events volunteer, and fills in often for her fellow producers
when they need a break. After volunteering for Minds Eye for over 16 years, she’s recorded over 2200 volunteer hours at Minds Eye alone!

When she’s not at Minds Eye, you can usually find Lorraine at one of her other volunteer jobs at the Shrine, Cahokia Mounds, Faith in Action, Project READ, or in her garden at home.

Minds Eye welcomes Miss Missouri!

Many people are taking part in the fight against the rise in cases of diabetes, including recent Talkback program guest, Sarah French, the reigning Miss Missouri.

Sarah talked to Minds Eye Program Director, John Weidlich, about the effect that diabetes, the leading cause of vision loss in adults, has had on her family. “My platform is called Health and Fitness for Life … I chose my platform because my mother, my grandmother, and my great-grandmother have all been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. It runs on my dad’s side too.”

Sarah stressed to Minds Eye listeners that diabetes can often be prevented through healthy living. “A scary thing is that the rising trend in obesity is leading to a lot of people being diagnosed with diabetes,” she said.

A broadcast journalism major at the University of Missouri, Sarah is busy juggling school, her duties as Miss Missouri, and getting ready for the Miss America Pageant. She is just about ready for the competition, but is most nervous about the interview portion. “They can ask you anything. Chris Matthews from Hardball is going to be one of the judges. I’m the only journalism major, and I know that he’s just going to drill me about my platform. So I’m just trying to prepare myself as best I can.”

You can see Sarah compete for the title of Miss America on CMT (Country Music Television) on Monday, January 29.
