Minds Eye Information Service Seeking Volunteer Readers to Support Program Growth

Minds Eye Information Service, a nonprofit radio reading service for the blind and print disabled of the St. Louis area, has added 25 additional hours of programming to expand and enhance current programming.  On-air volunteer readers are needed to support this exponential program growth and help Minds Eye bring printed words to life.  Those interested in serving the local community as an on-air reader should contact Minds Eye Information Service at 618-394-6443 or 314-241-3400, ext. 6443.

Each day, over 10,000 blind and visually impaired people living in the St. Louis metro area and the  residents of more than 80 nursing homes listen to radio receivers loaned to them by Minds Eye Information Service to listen to volunteers read informative and entertainment programming.  Some of the publications broadcast on Minds Eye Information Service include the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Belleville News Democrat, Wall Street Journal, People Magazine and Time Magazine, in addition to complete novels and retail advertisements.  The goal of the programming is to provide enrichment, empowerment and        enlightenment to support the self-reliance of people who are blind, visually impaired or unable to read print due to a physical disability.

“Minds Eye is wonderful for people like me,” says Sharon, a Minds Eye Information Service listener.  “It is my only outlet to the world and local area.”

Minds Eye Information Service volunteers come into the homes of listeners like Sharon on a daily basis not only to provide vital information, but companionship and independence.

“Our listeners receive more than just information when they turn on their Minds Eye radio because they know that the voices on the other end are providing them with accurate, un-edited material at a professional level ,” says Kathleen Gutting, Community Resource Specialist at Minds Eye Information Service.

Minds Eye Information Service currently has openings for volunteer readers to support a variety of new programs.  An interview and police check is required for acceptance into the volunteer program.  Those wishing to serve as readers must also pass a recorded audition.  For more information or to volunteer, please call Minds Eye Information Service at 618-394-6443 or 314-241-3400, ext. 6443, or visit the  volunteer page online at www.mindseyeradio.org.
