Minds Eye Information Service Experiencing Growth Spurt
With an expanded service area and 25 all-new programs, Minds Eye Information Service, a nonprofit radio reading service for the blind and print disabled of the St. Louis Metro Area, is growing exponentially. Those interested in becoming a listener or serving as an on-air volunteer reader or should contact Minds Eye Information Service at 618-394-6444 or
314-241-3400, ext. 6444.
Minds Eye’s new service area includes Herman, MO. as the Western border, Louisiana, MO. as the Northern border, Centralia, Ill. as the Eastern border, and Murphysboro, Ill. as the Southern border. In order to accommodate new listeners within the expanded service area and continue to provide timely and useful information, the station has added an additional 25 hours of programming to their 24 hour broadcast, including local newspapers within the new broadcast areas. On-air volunteer readers are needed to help Minds Eye bring printed words to life.
“Minds Eye is wonderful for people like me,” says Sharon, a Minds Eye Information Service listener. “It is my only outlet to the world and local area.”
Minds Eye Information Service volunteers come into the homes of listeners like Sharon on a daily basis not only to provide vital information, but companionship and independence.
“Our listeners receive more than just information when they turn on their Minds Eye radio because they know that the voices on the other end are providing them with accurate, un-edited material at a professional level,” says Kathleen Gutting, Community Resource Specialist at Minds Eye Information Service.
Minds Eye Information Service is a nonprofit radio reading service located on the grounds of the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows. The closed circuit radio station lends radios free of charge to people who are blind, have low vision, or are print disabled so they can listen to broadcasts of volunteers reading newspapers, magazines, books and retail circulars. The service reaches over 1,200 people in their own homes and the residents of more than 80 nursing homes, retirement centers and hospitals in the St. Louis Metropolitan Area. An interview and police check is required for acceptance into the volunteer program.
