Who We Are
Minds Eye Information Service (Formerly Radio Information Service) was established as a broadcast service for the blind and print impaired in 1973 by the Oblates of Mary Immaculate in Belleville, Illinois. We have a varied faith listenership, so our programming is designed to be non-sectarian.
You cannot hear us on your regular radio because we utilize the side band of WMVN 101.1 FM to broadcast our signal. We loan our listeners, free of charge, a special radio tuned exclusively to our signal that provides them access to our vital service.
Minds Eye relies on a small staff and more than 180 volunteer readers. If not for there efforts, our area's blind and print impaired would not have the ability to hear the verbatim readings from literally dozens of local and national newspapers and magazines each week. Our volunteers dedication provides informational broadcasting that helps the blind and impaired lead more enriched, productive and independent lives.
Who We Serve
Look around you, possibly, a grandparent, a neighbor, friend or relative is blind or print impaired. Thousands in our area already listen to Minds Eye daily but that's just a fraction of the population who might need our service. Print impaired means those who are blind have vision loss or who have muscular dystrophy, cerebral palsy, stroke, arthritis or any condition that makes holding reading materials difficult.
Our broadcasts extend in a 75 mile radius providing 24 hours a day of commercial-free information to 1,000 listeners living in their own homes. We also reach up to an additional 10,000 listeners in area nursing home, retirement centers and hospitals. We help many, we could help many more.
If you know someone whose life would be enriched by our service, tell him or her about us. Your help may help elimnate the isolation someone may be feeling in his or her life.
