Minds Eye Information Service Volunteer Reader
Job Description and Requirements
- Readers must have a pleasant voice and a superior reading aloud skills.
- Readers must pass required audition, interview and criminal background check.
- During review of required auditions, the audition team looks for a clear voice, good tempo, diction, inflection, volume, and pronunciation.
- After accepted as a volunteer, readers are expected to adhere to the quality standard set in their audition.
- All readers are expected to pre-read and prepare their reading materials before they begin reading aloud.
- Readers are prohibited from making editorial comments on the air.
- Readers should always strive for extreme professionalism when they are on-air.
- A three-hour a month time commitment is required for any reader position.
- Follow standards set out in the Program Guide Booklet and the Minds Eye Volunteer Manual.
Below are the different readers, most new reader volunteers start as substitutes and can have the option to move to a permanent spot. Readers may request a transfer of position at anytime.
Weekday Newspapers - You will read selected articles from two newspapers aloud live once a week from 8:00 - 11:00 AM with one or two other readers.
Weekend Newspapers - You will read selected articles from two newspapers aloud live once a month from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM with one or two other readers.
Weekly Programs - You will record yourself reading articles from various magazines and newspapers aloud once a week in one-hour segments.
Books - Record yourself reading from a new or St. Louis focused book in one-hour segments. Books are expected to be completed within two months of start. Books can be recorded from home under certain circumstances.
Substitutes - Fill in for regular Weekday and Weekend Newspaper and Weekly Program readers on an as needed basis according to your schedule.
Minds Eye Information Service Listener Outreach Volunteers
Job Description and Requirements
- Cheerful phone presence
- Clear voice
- Ability to communicate with the elderly
- Call listeners to complete a 10-minute survey that covers which shows they like and don't like, demographic information, and general satisfaction with the service.
- Volunteers must complete an in person interview and criminal background check before beginning service.
- This volunteer opportunity may be done at home or at Minds Eye Information Service.

Minds Eye Information Service Clerical Volunteer
Job Description and Requirements
- Good organizational skills
- Cheerful demeanor.
- Volunteers must complete an in person interview and criminal background before beginning service.
- An eight-hour a month time commitment is required.
- Clerical Volunteers work on a mutually agreeable day once a week for at least two hours a day.
- Follow standards set out in the MInds Eye Volunteer Manual.
Possible jobs can be but are not limited to
Filing - We often need people to pull out active files and move them to inactive files for listeners and volunteers that no longer work with us. Other times, new people need to be filed in. Volunteers must be fully mobile for this task.
Typing - Use a typewriter to make labels for file folders, address labels for new radios and other forms and letters. Must have excellent typing skills and accuracy. Ability to run an electric typewriter is required.
Computer Work - Work with our database to verify addresses and status of listeners. Volunteers may enter and delete listeners from the database and work with Microsoft Excel and Access files. Must have excellent computer skills and typing accuracy. Researching skills are a definite plus.
Telephone Work - Call new and old listeners to check on the status of their radios. Locate listeners and their family members to retrieve radios no longer in use.
Receiver Packaging - Assist in the intake and output of receivers to our listeners. You will verify if the radio is working and prepare radios to send out and prepare radios for storage after they come back from listeners. Volunteers must be fully mobile to do these tasks.
Minds Eye Information Service Technical Volunteer
Job Description and Requirements
- Interest and understanding closed circuit radio or digital technology.
- Volunteers must complete an in person interview and criminal background check before beginning service.
- Knowledge of basic electrical and software subjects.
- HAM radio enthusiasts or those with a technical background are ideal candidates.
- Follow standards set out in Board Operator’s and Producer’s Guide to Doing it Right, Program Guide Booklet, and the Minds Eye Volunteer Manual.
Checking Nursing Home Equipment - Visit nursing homes, hospitals, or retirement centers in your area that Minds Eye’s equipment are in to check to make sure that the systems are working properly.
Radio Repair Workers - Assist in repairing radios, harvesting broken radios for parts, and diagnosing problems.
Minds Eye Information Service Special Event Volunteers
Job Description and Requirements
- Support the paid staff in organizing and working at special events.
- Volunteers must complete an in person interview and criminal background check before beginning service.
The time commitment and length of position is subject to the role taken on. - Promote events like Trivia Nights, Beepball Tournament, Soiree pour la Vue, and Walk for the Blind.
- They will also work along the paid staff at the event for registration, raffle ticket selling, auctioneering, or other duties as assigned.
- Help ensure that all attendees of events learn about Minds Eye and have a great time!
- Engage other volunteers and Minds Eye supporters in events & planning.
- Assist in set up and clean up of events.
- Perform evaluations of events after the fact to ensure continued success.
- Sort and package donations for events

Business Outreach Volunteers
Job Description and Requirements
- Approach businesses in a professional manner to assist Minds Eye procure underwriting monies or donations for events.
- Volunteers must complete an in person interview and criminal background check before beginning service.
- Gentle persuasive manner desired; volunteers should not be overly pushy
- Professional dress required when visiting businesses
- Connections to local businesses desired.
- Time commitment and length of position depends on duties undertaken.
- Follow standards set out in the Minds Eye Volunteer Manual.
Community Outreach Volunteers
Job Description and Requirements
- Represent Minds Eye at health fairs and hospitals
- Volunteers must complete an in person interview and criminal background check before beginning service.
- Job is ongoing but sporadic in nature. Each assignment will be for at least 3 hours.
- Generally business casual dress is appropriate
- Overall knowledge of Minds Eye’s operations and staff is required (training provided)
- Set up and tear down booths
- Volunteers may be asked to take materials to the site and return them to Minds Eye Information Service.
- Follow standards set out in the Minds Eye Volunteer Manual.
Newspaper Producers
Job Description and Requirements
- Arrive at station by 7:30 AM.
- Volunteers must complete an in person interview and criminal background check before beginning service.
- Select, cut out, and prepare articles for morning newspaper program.
- Organize articles into Minds Eye’s Newspaper Sections.
- Follow standards set out in Board Operator’s and Producer’s Guide to Doing it Right and the Minds Eye Volunteer Manual.
